THE FREEZE RESPONSE HOW AVOIDANCE CAN MASQUERADE AS DISCERNMENT

We often hear about the fight-or-flight response, the body’s instinctive reaction to stress or danger. However, there’s another equally powerful reaction that’s not as widely discussed – the freeze response. When faced with stress, uncertainty, or fear, your nervous system may trigger this freeze response, causing you to feel immobilized, stuck, or overwhelmed.

This freeze response manifests in various ways, often disguised as something benign, like careful consideration or discernment. You may convince yourself that you’re simply weighing your options, being prudent, or exercising caution. On the surface, this reasoning appears wise and logical, but beneath it lurks a hidden pattern of avoidance, quietly sabotaging your growth and progress.

Understanding the Freeze Response

The freeze response is one of your body’s natural protective mechanisms. In the face of overwhelming stress or perceived threat, your body essentially says, “If I can’t fight this or escape from it, I’ll stay still and perhaps it will pass.” While this may be useful in genuinely dangerous scenarios, when it comes to life’s everyday challenges, goals, and dreams, this response can be incredibly limiting.

You might notice it as procrastination, indecisiveness, or a perpetual state of waiting. It might feel like an internal paralysis, where taking action feels insurmountably difficult. For instance, you might delay pursuing a new job, relationship, or creative project, rationalising your inaction as waiting for the “right moment,” when in reality, fear is holding you back.

Discernment or Avoidance?

Discernment is a powerful and necessary skill. It’s the ability to evaluate situations carefully, trust your intuition, and make choices aligned with your core values and long-term goals. Authentic discernment feels empowering; it provides clarity, confidence, and a sense of purposeful direction.

However, discernment’s shadow counterpart – avoidance – is often driven by fear. Avoidance masquerading as discernment will keep you spinning your wheels, endlessly contemplating options, and seeking certainty that rarely comes. Instead of feeling empowered, you end up drained, stuck, and frustrated by your lack of progress.

True discernment leads to a clear choice and eventual action, even if that choice involves temporary discomfort. On the other hand, avoidance disguised as discernment leads to confusion, repeated cycles of questioning, and prolonged inaction.

Signs You’re Experiencing a Freeze Response

How can you recognize if you’re experiencing a freeze response? Persistent indecision, even on relatively minor issues, is a common indicator. You might find yourself repeatedly unable to make a decision, constantly revisiting choices without arriving at a resolution. Avoiding tasks you intellectually know are important is another significant sign. You recognize what needs to be done but find yourself inexplicably unable to take action. Similarly, procrastination rooted in fear rather than laziness or lack of interest often indicates you’re experiencing a freeze response.

Constantly seeking external validation before making a decision is also indicative of the freeze response. You might find yourself frequently asking others for reassurance or approval, struggling to trust your judgment. Feeling overwhelmed or anxious when considering change or new experiences is another hallmark. Even when a new opportunity aligns with your desires and goals, the anxiety it triggers may lead to paralysis rather than progress.

Finally, experiencing “analysis paralysis,” getting stuck in endless loops of weighing options, is a clear sign you’re caught in the freeze response. Instead of taking action, you remain trapped in a cycle of overthinking and indecision. Recognizing these signs is a crucial step toward overcoming the freeze response and breaking the cycle of avoidance.

Why We Freeze

Understanding why you freeze is vital in changing this pattern. Usually, the freeze response is deeply tied to feelings of vulnerability, fear of failure, fear of rejection, or the fear of making the “wrong” decision. Past experiences of trauma, rejection, or harsh criticism can intensify this response, making it challenging to move forward without healing these underlying wounds.

Moreover, the freeze response often originates from a deep-rooted need for safety and control. Staying still or avoiding decisions can create an illusion of safety—if you never move forward, you never risk disappointment, failure, or loss.

Moving from Freeze to Flow

The good news is that you don’t have to remain stuck. Transforming your freeze response involves learning to identify your triggers, manage anxiety effectively, and cultivate genuine discernment. Mindfulness and grounding practices can significantly help manage anxiety, making decisions less overwhelming. Techniques such as breathwork, meditation, or simple grounding exercises provide an immediate way to calm the nervous system, allowing clarity to emerge naturally.

Cultivating somatic awareness is another valuable approach. By learning to recognize how freeze shows up in your body – tension, numbness, shallow breathing – you can intervene proactively, preventing full immobilization. Taking small steps forward can reduce resistance and build confidence. Rather than trying to leap directly from avoidance to immediate, decisive action, breaking down tasks into manageable steps helps create momentum.

Practicing self-compassion is essential. Cultivating kindness towards yourself reduces internal pressure, making it easier to make authentic decisions without the fear of “getting it wrong.” Finally, identifying and clarifying your core values can help differentiate between fear-driven decisions and those genuinely aligned with your long-term vision and purpose.
